Below you’ll find the answers to some frequently asked questions. Please be sure to read these and the fund’s terms & conditions before getting in contact with us, by emailing eatitupfund@hubbub.org.uk.
Eligibility

The fund is open to any organisation that can prove they are an officially constituted body, registered in the UK. We anticipate that most applications will be from:
Registered charities including charitable incorporated organisations and not for profit companies
Social enterprises
Community Interest Companies
Schools, universities and colleges
Local authorities
Micro and small businesses with a clear social purpose (less than 50 employees and an annual turnover under £10 million)

Initiatives not delivered in the UK
Businesses that do not match the criteria of micro and small businesses with a clear social purpose (less than 50 employees and an annual turnover under £10 million

Yes, but the funding can only be awarded to the lead applicant.

You may be a lead applicant once and then partner on additional applications as a supporting organisation.

If you’re invited to submit a full application, you can send your latest management accounts and tell us more about the individuals who’ll be involved in the initiative, demonstrating their track record and ability to manage projects and budgets.

This funding is for UK registered organisations to deliver UK based initiatives only.

We want to support initiatives that add to the fantastic range of food waste initiatives Hubbub has already supported. We welcome applications from organisations already delivering a Community Fridge, Food Hub or Food Connect project, but not to fund these specific activities or to expand them.
The Application Process

You submit an expression of interest, which will be assessed by Hubbub staff.
We’ll contact you if we’d like you to submit a full application.
Full applications will be assessed by Hubbub staff who will recommend a shortlist of applications for a grant panel to consider.
The grant panel will select the successful applicants from this shortlist to receive funding.
Unsuccessful full applicants will be offered short written feedback.
Successful applicants will be notified of their offer of a grant and will be sent a grant offer letter and full terms and conditions to agree to.

Open for full applications (those invited to apply): 9am, Monday 8th July 2024

Successful applicants informed: November 2024

The grant selection panel will include representatives from Hubbub and Starbucks, alongside food waste and industry experts. Hubbub will prepare a shortlist of applications for the panel. The panel will then make a final decision on which organisations will be offered a grant.

We’ll provide short written feedback to all applicants who have made a full application, if invited to do so after submitting an expression of interest. Feedback will not be provided for applicants at expression of interest phase who are not invited to submit a full application.

Grant recipients will be asked to:
Join a face-to-face round-table event with other grant recipients, hosted by Hubbub in London, shortly after funding is awarded. Grant recipients will be able to share plans, learn from each other and establish peer-to-peer connections.
Join a quarterly online one hour catch-up call hosted by Hubbub with all grant recipients to share progress.
Fill in a grant monitoring form six and twelve months after the award is made.
Share case studies and stories with Hubbub that will help bring the funded initiatives to life, to inspire change beyond your initiative.

Hubbub will share the combined learnings from the winning projects to help others tackle food waste too.

Use of Grant Funding

Yes, the grant funding or a portion of the grant funding can be spent on salaries if the person is working to deliver the initiative you’re submitting an application for.

We’ve not set specific limits on this. However, if you’re invited to submit a full application, you will need to set out why you’re applying for the amount requested

Yes - you’ll need to set out how these costs are directly attributed to the initiative for which you are applying for funding.

Yes, we can support initiatives that have either been tested and could use the funding to help them scale or are at an earlier stage with a concept ready to test.

The provision of the funding from the Eat It Up Fund amounts to a conditional gift and is therefore not subject to VAT. If any grant recipient is required by the UK Government to pay VAT on any products or services as part of their initiative, then they agree and acknowledge that their Eat It Up Funding application budget will have included any and all applicable VAT.

Hubbub expects the funding awarded to successful applicants to be used within one year of funding being awarded.

The fund is being supported by the Starbucks 5p cup charge which is applied each time a customer purchases a drink in a single-use cup. The funding is being distributed by Hubbub which is a charity.
Public funding describes financial resources provided by the government or public sector entities. It primarily comes from taxes, fees, and other revenue sources collected by the government.
We would not consider the Eat It Up Fund to be public funding.

Our focus for this funding is as high up the food waste hierarchy as possible.
While we have not set any specific limits. We’ll prioritise prevention and edible recovery/ repurposing over initiatives that don’t result in food being kept within the human food chain.
